Polyisobutylene succinimides (PIBSI) are the most widely used ashless dispersants. They have an oil-soluble polyisobutylene tail and a polar succinimide head that attaches to soot and sludge particles, keeping them finely dispersed in the oil.
Because they contain no metal, PIBSI dispersants add no ash. They are a core part of engine oil additive packages and are also used in fuel additives to help keep injectors and intake systems clean.
