DM water, also called demineralised or deionised water, is water from which dissolved mineral salts have been removed. It is used wherever the calcium, magnesium, chloride or other ions in ordinary water would cause scale, corrosion or contamination. DM Water Overview
Demineralised water is usually produced by ion exchange, reverse osmosis or a combination of both. Ion exchange swaps dissolved cations and anions for hydrogen and hydroxide ions, which recombine as water, leaving a product with very low conductivity.
Because it carries almost no dissolved salts, DM water does not leave scale or mineral residues, which makes it the standard dilution water for engine coolants and a common feed for batteries, laboratories and sensitive processes.
DM water quality is usually checked by conductivity: the lower the reading, the fewer dissolved ions remain. Drum-supplied DM water should be kept sealed, because contact with air, dust or unclean containers raises conductivity again.
