Cloud Point Glycol Overview
Cloud point glycols dissolve in water at surface temperatures but become less soluble as they heat up. Above their cloud point, which depends on the glycol and the brine salinity, they separate as fine droplets. Downhole, these droplets can adsorb on shale surfaces and plug micro-pores, which slows water and pressure entering the shale.
This mechanism is known as thermally activated mud emulsion (TAME). Below the cloud point the glycol still helps by adsorbing on clays. The glycol also adds lubricity, and it is often used with KCl and amine inhibitors such as our COROL SI300.

Handling, Storage & Safety
Polyalkylene glycols are generally of low hazard. Store drums closed in a cool, dry place and protect from contamination with water. Wear gloves and eye protection, clean up spills promptly because they are slippery, and follow the SDS.
