Furfural Overview
Chemically, furfural is furan-2-carbaldehyde, produced from agricultural by-products rich in pentosans. Its value in refining comes from its selectivity: it dissolves aromatic and polar compounds far more readily than saturated paraffinic hydrocarbons.
In lube oil extraction, this selectivity lets refiners pull aromatics out of a lube distillate, leaving a raffinate with a higher viscosity index and better oxidation stability. The solvent is then recovered and recycled. Outside refining, furfural is a building block for furfuryl alcohol, furan resins and other chemical intermediates.
