Ammonium Bifluoride Overview
Ammonium bifluoride (NH4HF2) is a white crystalline solid. When it is mixed with hydrochloric acid, it generates hydrofluoric acid in the blend. This is a common way to prepare mud acid on location without handling concentrated HF.
The HF formed dissolves silica, clays and other siliceous materials, which is why ABF is used to remove damage in sandstone reservoirs and to clean or etch metal and glass surfaces.

Handling, Storage & Safety
Ammonium bifluoride is toxic and corrosive. It releases hydrogen fluoride on contact with acids or moisture, and it can cause severe burns that may not be felt immediately. Store sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from acids, glass and incompatible metals. Use full chemical PPE, keep calcium gluconate first aid available as advised in the SDS, and follow the SDS strictly for all handling, first-aid and disposal steps.
