Monoethanolamine is an alkaline organic compound commonly used in gas treating systems to remove acidic gases such as CO₂ and H₂S. Because of its chemical properties, MEA is also used in detergents, surfactants and corrosion inhibitors, and as an intermediate in many chemical formulations.
MEA is the simplest ethanolamine: a primary amine with a hydroxyl group, fully miscible with water. Its high reactivity with CO₂ is why it is a reference solvent in amine gas treating, and its alkalinity makes it a useful neutraliser in cleaning and detergent products.
