Natural Gas Is Wet — and That’s a Serious Problem

Natural gas coming out of the ground always carries water vapour. Left untreated, that moisture corrodes pipelines, promotes gas hydrate formation, and degrades the efficiency of downstream processing and export. The solution used by gas processors all over the world — including across the UAE’s extensive onshore and offshore gas infrastructure — is Triethylene Glycol.

If you work in gas processing, you already know TEG. In this article, we look at what makes C6H14O4 so effective for natural gas dehydration, where else it’s applied across industry, and how Corofy supports TEG users across the GCC as a dedicated Triethylene Glycol manufacturer and Triethylene Glycol exporter based in Dubai

What Is Triethylene Glycol (TEG)?

Triethylene Glycol — chemical formula C6H14O4 — is a clear, odourless, hygroscopic liquid belonging to the glycol family of industrial chemicals. “Hygroscopic” means it has a natural affinity for water, selectively absorbing moisture from gas streams — which is precisely what makes it the industry standard for TEG Dehydration systems globally. It is widely sourced from Triethylene Glycol manufacturer and Triethylene Glycol exporter operations in the Middle East and Asia, and is listed on major chemical databases including ChemicalBook and PubChem under CAS number 112-27-6.

How TEG Dehydration Actually Works

Here’s the practical picture. In a natural gas dehydration unit, wet gas enters an absorption tower at the bottom and flows upward. Lean TEG — the dry, regenerated form — enters from the top and flows countercurrent to the gas. As the two streams interact, TEG selectively absorbs water vapour from the gas, producing pipeline-specification dry gas that exits from the top of the tower

The now “rich” TEG — loaded with water — exits at the bottom and is pumped to a reboiler, where heat drives off the absorbed water and regenerates lean TEG for recirculation. This continuous natural gas dehydration cycle is the foundation of gas processing at facilities across the UAE, including ADNOC’s onshore plants and offshore platforms.

One of TEG’s biggest advantages is its regenerability. In a well-maintained system, TEG losses are typically below 1 litre per MMSCFD of gas processed, and lean TEG purity of 99%+ is routinely achievable with modern reboiler technology. This makes TEG dehydration both cost-effective and aligned with the sustainability goals that Middle Eastern operators are increasingly pursuing.

Triethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate (TEGDMA): A High-Growth  Application

When TEG is reacted with methacrylic acid, it forms Triethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate

(TEGDMA) — a bifunctional crosslinking monomer with a growing range of industrial applications. TEGDMA is used extensively in:

    • Dental resins and composite filling materials
    • UV-curable adhesives and coatings
    • Advanced composite materials for aerospace and construction
    • Optical lenses and photopolymer systems

TEGDMA produces hard, durable polymer networks with excellent bonding strength and transparency. As the UAE’s construction, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing sectors continue to grow, demand for TEGDMA-based formulations is growing alongside them.

Other Industrial Applications of TEG

1. Plasticiser for Resins and PVC

TEG acts as a plasticiser in vinyl resins, cellulose derivatives, and flexible PVC formulations, improving flexibility and processability without significantly compromising physical strength.

2. Solvent in Extractive Distillation

TEG is an effective selective solvent for aromatic hydrocarbons — including benzene, toluene, and xylene — in extractive distillation processes used in petrochemical refining across the GCC

3. Humectant in Paper and Leather

In paper manufacturing and leather processing, TEG is used as a humectant to maintain optimal moisture content and prevent brittleness. It’s a small but consistent market that adds to the overall demand profile for TEG globally

4. Air Disinfection in HVAC Systems

TEG vapour has demonstrated antimicrobial properties and has been used in air disinfection applications within HVAC systems — particularly relevant as commercial building standards in the UAE continue to evolve.

Why the GCC Remains a Key Market for TEG

The GCC is home to some of the world’s largest gas processing and petrochemical complexes. With ongoing upstream development by ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, and QatarEnergy, and with regional gas infrastructure continuing to expand into new fields and export terminals, demand for quality TEG from a reliable Triethylene Glycol manufacturer will remain strong for the foreseeable future. As a Triethylene Glycol exporter based in Dubai, Corofy is positioned at the centre of this market — with direct port access, established logistics, and the technical capability to support TEG users at every stage of their operations

Sourcing TEG from Corofy in Dubai

    • Grades available: industrial grade and high-purity (99%+)
    • Full documentation: CoA, SDS, TDS with every shipment
    • Packaging options: drums, IBCs, bulk supply
    • Regional delivery: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain
    • Technical support for TEG dehydration unit specifications and make-up requirements

Storage and Safety

TEG is a low-toxicity chemical with no significant environmental persistence, but standard industrial hygiene protocols apply. Store in sealed containers away from strong oxidising agents and high heat. Always consult the SDS for full handling, spill response, and PPE requirements
